It's Time to Appreciate the Small Things in Your Life

If our ability to learn and develop is dependent on our ability to appreciate, then our ability to evolve as human beings, be better leaders or succeed means we would be well served by cultivating a more appreciative state. This requires daily practice.

We’re surrounded by millions of things we can appreciate, some small and relatively trivial; some magnificently significant.

The more we can appreciate the faster we can develop.

The faster we develop the better equipped we are to adapt to a fast-paced changing world.

Operating from a state of appreciation in life isn’t just some touchy-feely nonsense, there’s good scientific evidence that such positive emotional states directly improve brain function.

This is why we want you to challenge yourself to take a little bit of time out of your day, each day for the next seven days to begin appreciating yourself and others. We have mapped out a seven-day plan for you to follow and we would love to hear your appreciation stories. Combining this plan with daily emotion logging on the app will help you understand how just appreciating the small things can make such a difference to your underlying emotional state.

 

Day 1: Gratitude Journaling

•  Write down three things you are grateful for today. Try to be specific (e.g., “I appreciate my morning coffee because it gives me energy and comfort.”).

 Pause and Reflect: How does focusing on gratitude shift your perspective for the day? How does it make you feel?

Day 2: Write an Appreciation Letter

• Write a letter to someone who has positively impacted your life, expressing your appreciation for them. You can choose to send it or keep it for yourself.

 Pause and Reflect: How does it feel to articulate your appreciation? What memories does this bring up?

Day 3: Nature Appreciation

• Spend at least 20 minutes outside, observing nature. Take note of three things in your environment that you appreciate (e.g., the sound of birds, or the colours of the leaves).

 Pause and Reflect: How does connecting with nature affect your mood and sense of gratitude?

Day 4: Self-Appreciation

• List five qualities or achievements you appreciate about yourself. Focus on strengths, accomplishments, or moments when you felt proud.

 Pause and Reflect: How often do you acknowledge your own worth? How can you practice self-appreciation more regularly?

Day 5: Acts of Kindness

• Perform a small act of kindness for someone today (e.g., compliment a colleague, help a neighbour, or donate to charity).

 Pause and Reflect: How does it feel to contribute positively to someone else’s day? What impact does it have on your own sense of gratitude?

Day 6: Daily Affirmations

• Create a list of three positive affirmations related to gratitude (e.g., “I am grateful for the abundance in my life.”). Repeat these affirmations throughout the day.

 Pause and Reflect: How do these affirmations influence your thoughts and feelings about your day?

Day 7: Reflect and Share

• Reflect on the week and write down the most impactful moments from each day. Consider sharing your experiences with a friend or on social media using a gratitude hashtag.

 Pause and Reflect: How has your perspective on appreciation and gratitude changed over the week? What practices do you want to continue moving forward?
