The Power of Appreciation

If our ability to learn and develop is dependent on our ability to appreciate, then our ability to evolve as human beings, be better leaders or succeed means we would be well served by cultivating a more appreciative state. This requires daily practice.

We’re surrounded by millions of things we can appreciate, some small and relatively trivial; some magnificently significant.

The more we can appreciate the faster we can develop.

The faster we develop the better equipped we are to adapt to a fast-paced changing world.

Operating from a state of appreciation in life isn’t just some touchy-feely nonsense, there’s good scientific evidence that such positive emotional states directly improve brain function.

If cultivating our ability to appreciate things can transform our ability to learn, develop and succeed then it’s important to learn to appreciate ourselves as well as the world around us.

Feeling good or even appreciating yourself isn’t self-indulgent and it won’t make you arrogant.

Arrogance comes from a lack of self-awareness and a lack of self-appreciation.

People who brag about their abilities often do so because they need the approval of others. If you appreciate yourself, you don’t need to engage in flagrant self-promotion because you already feel good about yourself.

Appreciating yourself can start with the simple practice of appreciating the ability to see, and the magic of the human eye.

About 80% of all the data we take in from the world around us comes in through our eyes. Appreciating a magnificent sunset, a beautiful waterfall, great art, sport or simply someone else’s smile requires us to see. Even if we can’t see or simply close our eyes our other senses are equally marvellous.

If we cultivate the art of appreciation, every day, we can learn, develop and succeed despite the challenges of an ever-changing and accelerating world.
